Literacy Night Feb 2024

Springfield School celebrates Family Matters Week with annual Literacy Night.

Families of École Springfield School students were invited to the school building on Tuesday, February 20th to take part in a variety of literacy-based activities. While students had the opportunity to make their own book using a paper-bag, stickers, and markers, learn songs and test their skills in a guessing game among other activities, parents had the opportunity to learn about the various resources available to support student literacy both within, and outside, the classroom. Parents and guardians were also given a break from making supper that evening as the event provided all attendees a meal of soup and Bannock.

Some of the special guests in attendance on February 20 were members of the Peace River School Division’s Learning Services team including Literacy Program Coordinator Jessica Whalen and Indigenous Education Program Coordinator Holly Crumpton. While Whalen played literacy games with students, Crumpton showed parents and students the rich collection of books available in the Springfield Library that celebrate Indigenous culture. Community organizations such as the Peace Region Family Resource Network and the Peace River Municipal Library also attended the event to share about how their programs can support student literacy outside of the classroom environment.

The successful evening celebrating families and literacy welcomed approximately 180 people.
